Outreach Activities

  • Aid for Friends

Social Ministry continues to provide full meals for distribution through Aid for Friends each month. The need for meals for the homebound is great. If you would like to help with this outreach program, trays are always available in the church kitchen for you to fill at home and return to the church freezer. You may also choose to fill Breakfast Bags.

  • Delaware County Housing Coalition

This inter-faith ministry is family-oriented and is for all ages. No skills are required, but special skills are put to good use. Reformation is an active partner with other local churches and organizations to help repair and revitalize decaying neighborhoods in our community, such as the Sun Village area of Chester. Work days are scheduled several times a year. Members ages five through seventy-something have painted, swept, built, cleaned, replaced windows, pulled weeds and planted, and many other jobs, large and small.

  • Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, Inc.

DAP provides shelter and supporting services to families and individuals in our Delaware County communities trying to leave abusive situations. Reformation provides support to DAP through volunteers, donations, and activities in support of the children and adults in transition. Many volunteer opportunities for adults and youth are available, such as child care, tutoring, job training, grocery shopping for safe house residents, court advocate, medical advocate, hot line representative, office help, Nana's Attic (Broomall) thrift shop helper, and more. Some volunteer positions require training. DAP also provides education about healthy relationships and domestic abuse awareness in our local schools for Kindergarten through High School.

  • Interfaith Hospitality Network of Delaware County

IHN supports homeless families by providing transition housing and compassionate assistance. 70% of the families who participate find permanent housing and jobs. Eight or more congregations in each area work together to provide shelter, meals, and other support for one week (or more) per year. Reformation is an early partner in developing this effort in Delaware County. Our initial role will involve supporting the congregation that houses the families. Volunteers are needed to make and serve meals, help with homework, drive IHN vehicles, etc. and donate items as needed.

  • Missionaries in Africa

Reformation supports two missionary families in Africa.  Dr. Michael and Kay Johnson work with hospitals and orphaned children in Nairobi, Kenya.
Their home base is Philadelphia.  Robert and Janice Marie (JMe) Lowden live in Arusha, Tanzania and are the ELCA regional representatives to Tanzania and Rwanda.  Their home base is Catonsville, MD near Baltimore. The email addresses are: Michael.Johnson@wgm.org and bob@lowden.org

  • Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission at Rock Point, AZ

The Mission was founded 55 years ago by a Lutheran minister and is located in the Four Corners area of Arizona. The school provides quality Christian  education for 60 to 80 children from K through sixth grade. In addition, various outreach services address the social needs of the Navajo community. A much needed medical clinic will re-open this summer thanks to a generous grant. Through the efforts of two church members, who also are members of the NELM Board of Directors, Reformation became involved not only financially, but through in kind gifts, and volunteer opportunities at the Mission and at home.  For more information visit: www.nelm.org

  • Pangani Lutheran Church Partnership in Tanzania

Our partnership began after a trip to Tanzania in 1995 by two members of Reformation as part of a group from the ELCA Southeastern Synod of  Pennsylvania.  The Pangani Parish consists of 26 sub-parishes that have limited financial means to educate their children beyond elementary school.  In 2001 the Pangani Secondary Education Fund was initiated by Pastor Smoose to provide that financial support to the Parish.  This program has been very successful with over 140 students. Other plans are underway to help the Pangani Parish  become more self-supporting.

  • Recycling

Paper (no cardboard) can be deposited in the two large containers in our parking lot.  All other items such as eyeglasses, batteries, ink and toner cartridges, cell phones, greeting cards and magazines can be deposited in marked containers at the bottom of the main staircase which is across from the Sanctuary.

  • Refugee Resettlement/Lutheran Children and Family Services

Reformation has assisted several refugee families escaping war and torture in Liberia to resettle in our community. Our congregation is one of hundreds joined in this effort to resettle refugees from a variety of countries, ethnic groups and communities. Our members have responded generously with donations of furniture and beds, household items, clothing and food.

  • Rejoicing Spirits (Elwyn Ministry)

A groundbreaking successful ministry that reaches out to enrich the spiritual lives of individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, friends and other supportive community members.  This is done through an inclusive, adapted worship and fellowship that delivers God’s message of love.  The foundation of the ministry is rooted in 1 Corinthians 12:25,  “So that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.”  Reformation’s Rejoicing Spirits services will be held the second Sunday of each month, including summer months.  Find out more about this innovative service model on the national  Rejoicing Spirits website: www.rejoicingspirits.org

  • Road Clean-up

At least twice each year, volunteers from the congregation spend a few hours on a Saturday morning to clean up Rose Tree Road. Watch the church bulletin or the calendar for the dates!

  • St. Michael's Indian School in Arizona

In recent summer months, some members of Reformation journeyed to St. Michael's Indian School on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona. Some built a pump shed, one tuned pianos, and others visited Navajos in their homes. The Navajo were welcoming, and willing to share their traditions and culture. They are, however, very poor and isolated. Plan now to go to Arizona next summer with us, to build, to teach, to share our love with the Navajo. For further information, contact hydroslim@verizon.net or mailto:raj@johnsenlaw.com

  • Thanks to all who help with these outreach programs!
